Geita Gold Mine, owned by AngloGold Ashanti, began production in 2000 and is located in north-western Tanzania, in the Lake Victoria goldfields of the Mwanza region. The Geita gold deposit is mined as a multiple open pit operation with Star and Comet being the latest pits to be developed.
Moolmans was awarded a three-year contract late in 2010 to mine the Star and Comet pits, where mining began in April 2011. Challenges with the mobilisation of mining equipment to the site, which included shipping, transport by road freight and then by ferry across the lake to Mwanza and then to Nungwe Bay, were overcome through Moolmans’ experience and expertise in gaining access to remote sites.
Moolmans was responsible for the full mining operation which included load, haul and dump.
