Marikana is an open pit platinum mine situated close to Rustenburg, about 112km from Johannesburg in South Africa. It is a producer of Platinum Group Minerals (PGMs) and covers an area of 33km². The mine was commissioned at the end of 2002 and is jointly owned by Aquarius Platinum South Africa and Anglo American Platinum, under a 50:50 pooling-and-sharing agreement that was signed in 2005.
The scope of the Moolmans contract was waste and ore mining and Moolmans moved 2.6 million tonnes per month.
