Postmasburg is a small town in the Northern Cape, about 80km South West of our Sishen project. Kolomela mine is part of Anglo American’s Sishen Iron Ore Company. The life expectancy of the mine is 28 years, with a 9 Mtpa delivery of iron ore. Currently there are 3 pits of which Aveng Moolmans mines at the Klipbankfontein pit.
The mining fleet consist of Komatsu PC 3000’s loading Caterpillar 777 dump trucks, a Sandvik D45KS drill rig, Caterpillar D9 and D10 dozers plus the normal ancillary equipment.
The contract target volume was set at 33 000 000t over a period of 30 months. The average hauling distance should be within 2 km’s.
Aveng Moolmans currently employ around 300 people on site, but this number is expected to increase to about 400. All the employees had to go through the extensive medical and induction training at Kolomela mine. There is a big drive to employ people from the local community, and our training centre will assist us to up skill the local unskilled community on HME equipment.
