Shondoni

The scope of work consisted of developing the Shondoni Mine access points and the blind sinking and equipping of a 11.7mØ vertical men and services shaft to a depth of 165m. The blind sinking and lining of a 9.1mØ vertical up-cast shaft to a depth of 151m. The development of 12-degree 824m conveyor decline to a position below the Coal Surge Bunker. The 11.7mØ underground coal bunker was blind sunk and lined for 41m from the C4 coal seam to the bottom of the decline. A secondary access ramp of 405m was developed at 7 degrees from the bottom of the decline to the C4 coal seam. Also impressive was that the winder house was constructed on surface and lifted with one lift into position which resulted in a more cost effective and safer methodology. Weighing 291 tonnes, the winder house was moved horizontally over a distance of 58 m and lifted 30 m high. Early mining began with the C4 intersection conveyer system that allowed Sasol to mine and Moolmans to carry on with the development of the decline and the bunker.
